UHS has successfully conducted annual external disaster drill in order to test the hospital’s preparedness to respond to a major community disaster

The University Hospital Sharjah, through its Himchan Spine and Joint Centre, is now conducting Meniscus Allograft Transplantation (MAT) for patients suffering from severe knee conditions as a result of permanently damaged menisci.

A meniscus is a thin fibrous cartilage between the surfaces of some joints like the knee.

The surgery has been found to be effective in 85 per cent of patients treated by the hospital’s leading orthopedic surgeon.

MAT is a minimally invasive transplant surgery that uses advanced endoscopy which involves obtaining a C-shaped cartilaginous tissue called meniscus from a donor. It is transplanted into the patient’s knee. Since this meniscus is biologically identical to the patient’s own, the engraftment rate is remarkably high and there is no transplant rejection.

According to the hospital, the procedure can be done in 90 minutes, and it leaves only a minimal scar. MAT patients can also start walking six weeks after the operation and exercise after three months.

UHS announced that treating obesity with surgery in adolescents had shown positive results, based on a study of 70 adolescents conducted by the Obesity Surgery Center. Professor Dr. Tarek Ibrahim Mahdi, Head of Department and Consultant of General and Bariatric Surgeon, explained that the study assessed the responses of adolescents who were suffering from obesity. Majority of the cases were accompanied by effects that included type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and fat diseases with high probability of occurrence of obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Mahdi pointed out that the results were promising UHS uses latest medical technologies and an integrated approach to treat obesity, which potentially impedes physical movement and growth among adolescents with regard to weight reduction and treatment of diabetes, blood pressure stabilization and obstructive sleep apnea reduction.

Subsequent to the introduction of a new Post Recovery Care Unit (PRCU) dedicated to day surgery patients, the University Hospital of Sharjah announced that Himchan Spine and Joint Center has successfully performed more than 100 Percutaneous Epidural Neuroplasty (PEN) procedures. The hospital revealed that 95% of its patients reported a satisfying experience after undergoing the non-surgical one-day treatment, which reduces pain by more than 80% in people suffering from severe back pain.

Thanks to more recent advancements in the area of spine health, several non-surgical treatment options are available today even as the number of patients suffering from back pain continues to rise. Considered one of the most effective non-surgical treatment for back pain, PEN procedure involves an insertion of 1mm thin catheter to inject medication into the area that causes the pain. Following this, the area where the procedure is performed is irrigated with saline and anti-inflammatory medication is injected, thereby alleviating the pain significantly.
