Uterine disorders can cause infertility and can be congenital (a septate uterus) and benign. Bening uterine complications include fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis, endometriosis etc.

Male infertility

  • Hormonal disorders

Abnormal hormone production by the testicles, hypothalamus and pituitary glands can deregulate sperm production, causing infertility in men. The most common cause of such hormonal imbalance is cancer in pituitary glands or testicles.

  • Clogged reproductive tract

Tracts such as seminal vehicles and ejaculatory ducts responsible for carrying semen get clogged due to injuries and infections in the genital tract. This obstruction could be responsible for infertility among men.

Varicoceles or medical procedures like chemotherapy might inhibit the ability to produce sperms in men causing infertility.

IUI is one of the procedures to carry out artificial insemination. It helps sperms swim to the fallopian tube and fertilize the eggs resulting in a normal pregnancy. Washed and concentrated semen is inserted around the uterus at a pre-estimated time of the release of eggs by the ovaries. IUI can be streamlined with a regular period cycle or with fertility drugs.

IUI is feasible for conception for conditions like endometriosis infertility, mild male factor infertility, cervical factor infertility, ovulatory factor infertility and unexplained infertility.

IVF is the most popular type of Assisted Reproductive Technology. It uses eggs harvested from the ovaries that are fertilized with sperms to metamorphose into an embryo. The embryo is either stored for future use or is placed in the woman’s uterus to get her pregnant. UHS has a state of art Embryology lab that provides comprehensive IVF and related procedures. .

At times, the sperm cannot permeate through the outer layer of the woman’s egg due to multiple reasons like production of less than required sperms in the man, a blockage in the male reproductive tract, the thickness of the egg, or because the eggs are previously matured and frozen. In such cases, ICSI can be executed along with IVF to help the fertilization of eggs by injecting a solo sperm into the egg cytoplasm.

Scientifically known as mature oocyte cryopreservation, egg freezing helps women to get pregnant by saving their unfertilized eggs for the future. Firstly, egg production boosting drugs are given to the woman. The eggs are harvested from the uterus and frozen to be fertilized later. These eggs can be unfrozen and infused with sperm in the lab and replanted in the uterus through In Vitro fertilization.

Egg freezing is a feasible option for women who are not ready to get pregnant or unable to get pregnant because of health-related issues.

Embryo freezing or embryo cryopreservation is similar to the process of egg freezing. The difference is that instead of unfertilized eggs, it helps in preserving a fertilized embryo. The procedure involves boosting egg and sperm cells and transforming them into embryos which are then frozen. The embryo can be thawed and used later. Embryo freezing is a crucial element of IVF programs.

Embryo freezing is a feasible option for couples to try again if their first attempt to have a baby through IVF fails. Couples conceiving their first child through IVF can have more by freezing embryos.

A pregnancy is high-risk when it comes with complications that can negatively impact the mother, foetus or both. A pregnancy becomes high-risk because of several factors and requires special attention and management by expert doctors to ensure the wholesome nurturing of the child and care of the mother.

Some of the factors that can make a pregnancy high-risk are medical conditions before or during pregnancy like diabetes, autoimmune diseases, STD’s, lung/ kidney/ heart disease, obesity, depression and other types of autoimmune infections.
